The Dead started doing it back in the Mother McCree's jugband days. They got it from the Memphis Jug Band, who recorded it in 1928 as the Lindbergh Hop (Overseas Stomp).

Is the Mother McCree release still available to buy? Until I checked out this YouTube link I had only heard a song or two from it and now I would love to get my hands on a copy. I did not see it on dead.net, but might have missed it somehow.

and as you note, nothing at dead.net...they had the last time I looked but that was months and months ago...pre-store redesign...

it might have been offered as a download only...I recall getting my copy from there and it was a download though I can't remember if they had a cd available or not...
